Distance: about 330 km, mostly motorway (A1/A4 via Rabat, then the road into the Rif)

Road: motorway until the Rif foothills, then a well-maintained but winding mountain road — be careful at night

Casablanca → Merzouga (gateway to the desert)

Distance: about 560–600 km depending on the route (via Beni Mellal, or via Fes/Midelt and the Ziz valley)

Duration: 9–10 hours of driving — plan a stopover (Midelt, Errachidia or Fes)

Road: paved all the way to Merzouga; the Erg Chebbi dunes are reachable without a 4x4
